How could Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool line up next season?

We examine how Jurgen Klopp might look to change his Liverpool squad next season in the summer transfer window.

From goalkeepers to strikers, the Reds have been linked with a host of players ahead of the opening of the summer transfer window at the end of the campaign.

So which players are under threat and who are the new faces that could potentially line up for Klopp's Liverpool next season? We take a look at some of the possibilities…

Goalkeeper

Simon Mignolet signed a new long-term contract at Liverpool in January but his position as their No 1 remains under scrutiny. The Belgian ranks first among Premier League goalkeepers for errors leading to opposition attempts this season, and many supporters are eager to see a new man between the sticks in 2016/17.

Liverpool's only other current options are Adam Bogdan and the inexperienced Danny Ward, and transfer speculation suggests Klopp is looking to strengthen the position. The German has been linked with a move for fellow German Marc-Andre ter Stegen, with reports saying the Reds could go head-to-head with Manchester City for the Barcelona goalkeeper.

Defence

Having conceded more goals than the likes of Watford and West Brom this season (43), Liverpool's defence is another area in need of attention. Klopp began the process of strengthening his defence in January, when he agreed a deal to sign centre-back Joel Matip from Schalke.

Matip, who will join the Reds when his contract expires at the end of the season, is well-known to Klopp having featured prominently for Borussia Dortmund's rivals in the Bundesliga since 2009, and the right-footed Cameroon international could be used alongside the left-footed Mamadou Sakho in the centre of Liverpool's defence in the future.

Nathaniel Clyne will expect to hold on to his place at right-back with the fit-again Jon Flanagan as his deputy, but there could be a new face on the left, where the Reds are short on alternatives to Alberto Moreno.

According to the Daily Mirror, Klopp has set his sights on Cologne left-back Jonas Hector. The 25-year-old, who has 12 caps for Germany and started in their 3-2 defeat to England last month, is valued at around £12m and can also play in defensive midfield.

Midfield

Klopp could also look to shake things up in midfield, with Sky sources confirming his interest in signing Mario Gotze in March. The 23-year-old is unsettled at Bayern Munich having failed to hold down a regular starting spot under Pep Guardiola, and he could be tempted by a reunion with the manager he played under at Borussia Dortmund.

The Reds boss would have to decide which of Gotze, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana would be his first-choice in their favoured No 10 role, and he also has decisions to make elsewhere in midfield.

Reports have linked Liverpool with a move for Poland international Piotr Zielinski, who has impressed for Serie A side Empoli on loan from Udinese this season. The 21-year-old claims he has been in contact with the Reds over a possible summer move to Anfield, and he could challenge the likes of Jordan Henderson and James Milner for a spot in central midfield along with the 20-year-old Serbian Marko Grujic.

Forwards

There is more uncertainty up front, where Divock Origi has been preferred to Daniel Sturridge in recent weeks despite the England international's return to fitness. Sturridge's injury record is a major concern for Klopp, and with Christian Benteke out of favour and unsuited to Liverpool's style, the Reds boss could hit the transfer market for reinforcements at the end of the season.

According to newspaper reports, Marseille's Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi is one of his top targets. The 22-year-old has scored 24 goals in 52 appearances for club and country this season, although the Reds could reportedly face competition for his signature from the likes of Tottenham, West Ham and Juventus.
